Returning to the Scottish Highlands after a fierce battle with the English, Tayg Munro receives a hero's welcome - and an ultimatum. To take his place as heir to the chiefdom, he must choose a wife or have one chosen for him. Furious and stalling for time, the brooding warrior volunteers for a mission that takes him deep into the Highlands, with no hint of the fateful encounter that awaits him....

Catriona MacLeod is known as the Shrew of Assynt, thanks to her razor-sharp tongue and her unwillingness to yield to her five brothers. When she learns that her eldest brother has promised her hand in marriage to a loathsome man, she flees into the Scottish wilderness, determined to seek the king's intervention. There she reluctantly joins forces with a handsome traveler, unable to anticipate the treacherous plot that will soon embroil them - or the passion that will ignite between them.

There are a surprising amount of books currently available on KU. I never did read the sequel of this book for some reason and so I downloaded it now. Obviously I didn't remember too much of this first book so I re-read it today before reading the sequel. I don't have the same complaints as the negative reviewers. To be honest, I was thrilled that there wasn't the fake Scottish dialogue that I find so tiresome to endure. The characters were well written but I struggled with the h for a good part of the book because she did, as the title suggests, behave like a shrew. The H was very charming and their relationship developed well and believably. The H has come across a plan to challenge Robert the Bruce, disguised in a letter from the h's betrothed to her brother. The H has been playing a bard so that he can get away from the fact that he needs to marry and take over leading his clan after the unexpected death of his older brother, the original heir. The H has always had all the women after him and no one can resist him. He makes a terrible bard but it does help him to uncover the plot against King Robert, when he is given the letter to deliver to the h's brother. Meanwhile the h is running away from the plan to have her marry the clan leader her older brother has selected for her. She bumps into the H while she is running away and he helps her to find shelter. The H decides to keep his identity a secret and the longer it goes on, the less he wants to tell the H. The inevitable misunderstanding happens but thankfully it didn't last long.

There were a few things that bothered me about this story. One was the h's rash insistence on trying to help her youngest brother and the H foil her villainous older brother and her betrothed. I'm not a fan of this story line at all. I didn't love the fact that the main characters had sex before he revealed who he really was to her. It worked in the context of the story though and I did like that they declared their love before they had sex. If I'm not mistaken, the fact that they declared themselves married in front of other people, including a friar, made them at least hand-fasted, if not married according the law at the time. I could be wrong and the author never mentioned it.

Charming the Shrew The Legacy of MacLeod Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Laurin Wittig Ralph Lister Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

l enjoyed the banter between the H/h a lot. This author pulled me into this story with strong character's that were developed and felt genuine.

Besides the clever dialogue, we get suspense, more than one villain, interesting people they meet on their journey. The romance builds slowly and we are treated to HEA that has heart.

There is one lovemaking scene - very mild - maybe 3 out of 5 if that on heat level, outside marriage. There is a secret our H keeps from the h that almost ends their relationship before it even begins.

I would recommend this story. I am not going into the blurb as many have explained it better than I, just what you may feel reading it. (ljb)
This book is very good and contains no bad language and very little sex. The story of Tagh and Cat is one of Laurin Wittig's best. The series should be one of her best.
Cat has been raised with all brothers who constantly picked on her causing her to withdraw into anger and a shrewish tongue. Her oldest brother is very evil to her and would force her to marry Dogface MacDollen for him to ally with his clan. Cat leaves and meets Tagh who is posing as a bard and is in her territory on the King's business. Cat wants to travel to see the king and find a husband to take charge of her clan. Their adventures are many on their journey to the King. Read this book for a good read and a nice change of the usual warfare. I give Laurin 4 stars and am ready to read book 2 in this series.
For the first time ever I bought a book and then read the reviews after. They were saying how unlikable the heroine was and how unfair she was to the hero and how selfish she was ect...

I instantly regretted buying the book because I hate reading books where you don't like the heroine but since I had bought it I decided I might as well try and read it. I completely expected to hate the book and honestly I LOVED it. I almost makes me wonder if those who wrote the negative reviews even read it!!

The heroine is abit harsh at first but she is by no means evil or selfish and she is about and unfair in her judgement of him as he is of her. Which makes their journey together all the more entertaining.

This book kept me on edge and while maybe my one complaint was that the secondary plot with Broc and Dogface was a little underdeveloped, I had no problem with that because the main story was so entertaining.

To some it up it is definitely worth the buy and don't let the negative reviews tell you otherwise.
I thought it was a decent book. Catriona/Cat/Triona definitely lets her tongue get the better of her at the beginning of the book. However she has reason for her sharp tongue. She has five brothers and only one of them has ever treated her OK. It fact around 70% of the way thru the book you find out one of the horrible things her brothers pulled on her. However I can see that some people will not be able to handle her at first. Her first thought when someone gets the better of her is to pay them bad by doing something mean. She starts to overcome her shrewishness, her temper, and actually makes a friend on her journey. Something he has never had. Tayg is one of those charming handsome men no lass can help but want. All the lasses really want him after a bard makes up stories about how great he was in the war. He wants to pick his own bride. Someone who wants him for himself, not because of who he is. I like to have sex scenes and this book basically just has a little description of touching and then leaves the rest to the imagination. So would have been better had she thrown in some steamy scenes. I know that is not for everyone so for those who do not like those you may like this book. Please remember this is a fictional book so everything may not be perfect or accurate. Not sure why people who review these types of book expect them to be.

Sex content low.
